Creating Career Opportunities: A Practical Guide to Planned Happenstance Theory

By the end of this 6-week seminar, participants will be able to:
- Apply the core principles of Planned Happenstance Theory in career counseling practice
- Guide clients in developing the five skills essential for creating beneficial chance events
- Design interventions that help clients recognize and capitalize on unexpected opportunities
- Integrate Planned Happenstance principles with traditional career development approaches
- Implement practical tools and strategies to help clients embrace uncertainty
COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1 –Foundations of Planned Happenstance
Week 2 – Creating & Recognizing Opportunities
Week 3 – Learning from Mistakes and Taking Action
Week 4 – Skills Development and Career Growth
Week 5 –Implementation and Future Planning
Format: Interactive, online discussion with career professionals. Participants will have weekly assignments, readings, and discussions. Assignments open on a Sunday and remain open for 1 week. You may log in and post at any time convenient for you. We only ask that you please post your initial response by 11:59 pm EST on Thursday so that the discussion can continue for the entire week.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Required Text: “Luck Is No Accident” by John D. Krumboltz and Al S. Levin
- All assignments must be completed on time
- All participants must actively participate in the weekly discussions online, posting and replying to at least one other person.
- End of the seminar action plan: Your action plan to move forward in your wellness journey.
- Technology requirements: Internet access, ability to read MS Word documents & Adobe PDF files, ability to view video (primarily using YouTube)
ASSESSMENT OF COMPLETION OF COURSE:
- Evaluation will be made of the quality of the discussion in the class. All participants will post in each forum discussion. Participants are expected to be active in the online exchange of information, perspectives, and experiences.
- Must reply to at least one other person in the seminar in each discussion
- The final action plan is due within two weeks of the completion of the class.
- Payment is due in full at least one week before the seminar begins unless other arrangements have been made.
- Cancellations must be in writing via email.
- If you cancel and have paid through PayPal or Venmo, we will refund you minus their fees.
- If Careers by Design cancels the seminar, a full refund will be granted.
- Cancellations less than 1 week before the seminar begins will incur a $50 fee.
- No refunds will be granted for cancellations once the seminar begins.
- Refunds will be issued within 2 weeks from the cancellation request date.
